How to Calculate Your Grade

This calculator offers three ways to calculate your grade depending on what you need:

  • Weighted Grade — Each assignment or category has a different weight (importance). A final exam worth 40% matters more than homework worth 10%. This is the most common grading system at universities and colleges.
  • Final Exam Needed — Enter your current grade, the grade you want, and how much the final is worth. The calculator tells you exactly what score you need on your final exam.
  • Simple Average — All scores count equally. Enter any number of scores and get the average instantly.

How Weighted Grades Work

A weighted grade system assigns different levels of importance to different types of work. For example, a typical university course might be graded as: Homework 20%, Midterm Exam 30%, Final Exam 40%, Participation 10%.

To calculate the weighted grade: multiply each score by its weight percentage, add all the results together, then divide by the total weight (which should equal 100%).

Frequently Asked Questions

What if my weights don't add up to 100%? +
The calculator will warn you if your weights don't total 100%. It will still calculate based on the weights you entered but the result may not reflect your actual grade. Always make sure your weights total exactly 100% for an accurate result.
What score do I need to get an A? +
In the standard US grading scale, an A requires a score of 90% or above. Use the "Final Exam Needed" tab — enter your current grade, set desired grade to 90, enter your final exam weight, and the calculator will tell you exactly what you need to score.
Can I use this for university courses? +
Yes — the weighted grade calculator is ideal for university courses where different components carry different weights. Add each component (lectures, labs, assignments, midterm, final) with its weight percentage as shown in your course outline.
How do I calculate my GPA? +
GPA uses letter grades converted to grade points (A=4.0, B=3.0 etc) weighted by credit hours. Use our dedicated GPA Calculator for a full GPA calculation across all your courses.
